Egyptian lawmakers repeat support for Palestinian cause

Cairo, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) Egyptian parliamentarians on Tuesday repeated their country's support for the Palestinian cause, and denounced Israel's crimes in the occupied territories.

Mujahid Nassar, a member of the House of Representatives, the told Al-Ahram daily that Cairo will not abandon the Palestinian people neither politically nor financially.

He noted the importance of a tripartite summit held on Monday between Presidents Abdel Fatah El-Sisi (Egypt) and Mahmoud Abbas (Palestine), and King of Jordan Abdullah II.

“The event is very important to revitalize Arab solidarity with the inhabitants of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip,” he stressed.

Nassar’s colleague in parliament, Ahmed Bahaa Shalaby, spoke in a similar vein, considering that the meeting confirmed Egypt’s support for the Palestinian struggle, and urged to search for just peace in this conflict, pointing out that it is an urgent need at the regional and international levels.

He also condemned Israel’s systematic attacks and demanded compliance with international agreements on the subject.

Senator Hussein Khudair stressed that Egypt and Jordan have a strong relationship with the Palestinian cause, not only due to their geographical proximity, but due to their historic ties.

Lawmaker Muhammad Al-Rashidi, in turn, pointed out that the summit contributed to coordinating positions in order to mobilize international support for the Palestinian people.

The three heads of State demanded the end of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and called for the creation of a State for the inhabitants of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with its capital in East Jerusalem.

The final declaration of the summit called for Israel’s withdrawal and the restoration “to the Palestinian people of all their legitimate rights, including their right to self-determination (and) the settlement of the refugee question in accordance with the resolutions” of the United Nations Security Council.

They also called on Israel to comply with its obligations and commitments under international law, stop its aggression and calm the situation on the ground in preparation for the revival of peace negotiations.
