Southern Africa bets on cooperation for peace and security

Luanda, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) The executive secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Elias Magosi, said today the members of the group are committed to cooperation to ensure regional peace and security.

Speaking at the meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the SADC body for Political, Defense and Security Cooperation, in charge of preparing the report to the 43rd Summit of Heads of State and Government of the group, the official highlighted the spirit of solidarity in which they work.

The summit, which will take place tomorrow, August 17, in this capital, will address the issue with a focus on the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the province of Cabo Delgado, in Mozambique, where armed conflicts persist.

Several heads of state and government arrived this Wednesday in Angola to participate in the meeting, preceded by the discussions among the representatives of the Troika, currently composed by Namibia, Zambia and South Africa.

Magosi assured that SADC worked in the deployment of the Mission in the DRC, in order to support the government of that country in the fight against armed groups, and to restore peace and security in the eastern part.

Meanwhile, in Mozambique, they also conducted a military mission in July 2021, to help combat acts of terrorism and violent extremism in the province of Cabo Delgado.

The SADC meeting should also assess progress in the implementation of national reforms in the Kingdom of Lesotho, and progress in the political and security situation in the Kingdom of Eswatini, the executive secretary noted.
