Nigerian Islamic scholars seek solution to conflict in Niger

Niger-6
Abuja, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) The Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, sent to Niger a mission of Islamic scholars (Ulema) to seek a peaceful solution to the political crisis unleashed after a military coup d'état, the publication Vanguard reported today.

Tinubu, who is also Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), said he asked the delegation of prominent religious scholars to speed up progress in their ongoing talks with the imposed Nigerian military junta.

According to the news outlet, the prominent clerics had earlier engaged in talks with the Nigerian military chiefs to facilitate the restoration of constitutional governance.

In this context, the Abuja leader also pointed out that he is managing a very serious political crisis in Niger, where the country’s president, Mohamed Bazoum, who, on July 26th, was overthrown in a coup d’état, is being held by the new authorities.

Following the coup d’état, the Ecowas, a bloc comprising 15 countries, imposed severe economic restrictions on Niamey, including the suspension of financial assets by banks and the closure of the airspace of the countries in the area to aircraft from that territory.
