Increase in Sudanese refugees creates humanitarian crisis in Chad

N'Djamena, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) The increase in the number of Sudanese refugees to eastern Chad, due to the war, has created a humanitarian crisis as a result of food, water, shelter, and medical care shortages.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Emergency Coordinator in Adré Susana Borges stated that many of these people had not received food in five weeks and, in some cases, did not even have cooking utensils.

The war between the Sudanese Army and paramilitaries has forced more than 4.5 million people to flee their homes.

More than 400,000 refugees and some 60,000 Chadian residents in Sudan have arrived in eastern Chad.

MSF Emergency Director Trish Newport noted that the situation in eastern Chad is complex and might deteriorate further if aid does not arrive quickly. Clashes in Sudan started on April 15, due to disagreements between the Rapid Support Forces, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, Vice-President of the Sovereign Transitional Council (STC), and Army Chief and STC President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
