Syria and Russia reject Western pressure and blackmail in OPCW

rusia-siria
Damascus, Sep 4 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal Al-Mekdad, and the Russian delegate to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Alexander Shulgin, repudiated the pressure and blackmail of the West in that structure against independent countries.

During a meeting in Damascus, the functionaries reviewed the existing coordination and cooperation between the permanent missions of both countries in the OPCW with the aim of facing common challenges, in particular, the hostile and distorting actions of some Western countries.

They also condemned the politicization of the Organization’s work and the hostile approach towards certain nations that challenge Western plans, and repudiated the accusations and disinformation campaigns aimed at distorting the image of Syria and Russia in the group.

Al-Mekdad reiterated the Syrian position, which rejects the use of chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere and under any circumstances, and ratified Syria’s commitment to the Convention on these weapons and the provision of all necessary facilities for the work of the OPCW.

The official thanked Moscow for supporting Syria in the OPCW and highlighted the deep historical and friendly ties between the two countries.

The Russian delegate considered that the existing cooperation and coordination between the two permanent missions in The Hague, contribute in confronting the attempts of Western countries to impose their hegemony over the work and decisions of the OPCW, and to curb disinformation campaigns spread by Western circles that politicize the organization’s work.

Damascus previously denounced the positions of the governments of the United States and the the European Union on the chemical weapons file as hypocritical, false and misrepresenting, and denounced that these countries should stop politicizing the work of the OPCW and divert their work to the objectives for which it was created.
