Caricom delegation continues visit to Haiti

Port-au-Prince, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) A delegation of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) continues today its visit to Haiti and is scheduled to meet with the signatories of the Kingston Declaration, as well as representatives of other political parties.

The Group of Eminent Personalities appointed by the regional organization to serve as mediators in the Haitian crisis, held the day before a meeting with Prime Minister Ariel Henry and the members of the High Transitional Council (HCT).

A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday with the signatories of the Kingston Declaration, which brings together several political parties and advocates the establishment of a new transitional government consisting of a president and a prime minister.

In general terms, the Caricom delegation has priority issues for discussion such as the recomposition of the HCT, constitutional reform, as well as security and the establishment of a public security government.

Some local media also indicate that the emissaries of the regional body have a proposal for an agreement to end the prolonged political stalemate and allow the constitution of a transitional national unity administration.

According to the newspaper Le Nouvelliste, the document was delivered by the emissaries to all the protagonists of the crisis, and its drafting was the result of discussions between Henry and the representatives of the governmental agreement, together with political and civil society leaders.

The text proposes a balance of power between the executive actors, includes accountability through the HCT and other structures, and encourages an electoral process and the reform of state and judicial institutions.

This is the second visit in two months by the Caricom delegation which in mid-July failed to reach agreement among Haitian politicians and civil society leaders.
