Cuban President Díaz-Canel meets with ITU Secretary

Havana, Sep 14 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel met here on Thursday with the General Secretary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin, who is visiting Havana for the first time.

At the meeting, held at the Palace of the Revolution, the Cuban head of State congratulated the visitor on her election as ITU head last year, when she became the first woman to assume that position since that organization was established in 1865.

Díaz-Canel thanked the ITU for its confidence in Cuba by granting Havana the venue to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Accessible America event, which will take place from November 8 to 12.

According to a press release from the Cuban Ministry, Díaz-Canel also highlighted the importance of the completion of the Project for the Control of the Radio Spectrum, developed jointly between Cuba’s Ministry of Communications and the ITU.

During meeting, Cuba’s efforts to promote a digital, inclusive and participatory society was acknowledged, according to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

In this regard, it was explained that work is being done on the development of the Policy for Digital Transformation, which enriches and updates the Comprehensive Policy for the improvement of the computerization of society, approved in 2017.

This is taking place despite the considerable and tangible damage caused to the communications sector by the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than 60 years, and the Caribbean island’s inclusion on Washington’s arbitrary and unilateral list of States Sponsors of Terrorism.

The meeting, also attended by ITU Regional Director for the Americas Bruno Ramos, Cuban Communications Minister Mayra Arevich, and the General Director of Multilateral Affairs and International Law at Cuba’s Foreign Ministry, Rodolfo Benítez, was held in the context of the G77+China Summit.
