“Walls are closing in on civic spaces. Misinformation and disinformation are poisoning public discourse, polarizing communities and eroding trust in institutions,” Guterres added.

The UN chief said it is not enough to listen to children and young people, but they must also be supported with massive investments in education, skills development and lifelong learning.

Guterres called for protecting human rights and promoting gender equality as well as expanding the meaningful participation of the newest in decision-making processes at all levels.

“On this important day, let´s join hands across generations and work as one to build a more just world for all,” he concluded.
