Human rights violations reported in Amhara, Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) Human rights abuses, arbitrary arrests and displacement of civilians in the Amhara region have been confirmed by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (ECHR), it was learned on Tuesday.

An ECHR report revealed that civilian injuries, deaths and arbitrary imprisonment are among the most urgent concerns in that area under a state of emergency since August 4, due to clashes between regional forces and armed groups from the FANO militia.

The commission called on all parties to respect human rights and international law after gathering information from victims, witnesses and local residents. The testimonies corroborated reports on an escalating armed conflict in numerous districts, endangering the civilian population.

“Farmers working in the fields, as well as those seeking refuge in their homes, have been caught in the crossfire with heavy weapons,” the report said.

The Commission recommended the proper execution of the emergency decree and strict adherence to legal protocols as an effective means to solve the crisis.

This independent federal state agency is established by the Constitution and reports to the representatives of the House of Peoples (Parliament) as a national institute for the promotion and protection of human rights.
