Bukele’s speech at the UN has wide repercussion in El Salvador

San Salvador, Sep 20 (Prensa Latina) The speech of the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, at the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations has had a wide repercussion today in local media.

The newspaper El Mundo emphasized the president’s statement that the institutional changes promoted by the Legislative Power in May 2021 were indispensable to implement his security plan and ensure that El Salvador is no longer ‘the capital of death’, although this measure was criticized by opposition sectors and human rights defenders.

Bukele referred to the change of Attorney General and Constitutional Chamber made on May 1, 2021 by the Legislative Assembly, which dismissed the magistrates of the Constitutional Chamber who were ending their mandate in 2027 and replaced them.

We were criticized and condemned for each of the decisions we made at that time”, the newspaper quoted the head of state as saying.

It also stressed the presidential pronouncement in which he stated that ‘They engaged in a debate about what we were doing.

Today I come to tell you, that debate is over, we are no longer the world capital of death, today we are a security reference, there are the results’.

On the other hand, El Salvador newspaper of pro-government tendency, covered the speech with a big headline ‘Nayib Bukele emphasized at the UN transformation of El Salvador’, which led the country to position itself before the concert of nations.

The President’s speech was rebroadcast last night in prime time in a national radio and television network.
