Cuba and Bhutan celebrate 12 years of diplomatic relations

New Delhi, Sep 26 (Prensa Latina) Cuba and Bhutan are celebrating the twelfth anniversary of diplomatic relations, which have been reinforced with ties of friendship, collaboration and dialogue, the Cuban Embassy in India noted on Tuesday.

The ties between the two countries have their key precedent at a meeting in Havana in 1979, during the 6th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, between the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and then King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the diplomatic mission added.

The source stated that Cuba is proud of having contributed modestly to the social development of Bhutan by granting scholarships to study medicine, and repeated its gratitude for Bhutan’s support for the Caribbean island’s struggle to eliminate the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

Last May, during a visit by the Cuban ambassador, resident in India and concurrent in Bhutan, Alejandro Simancas, Prime Minister Lotay Tshering reiterated the Kingdom’s solidarity with Cuba’s cause.

The Bhutanese head of Government also highlighted the good relations between the two countries.
