Cuban scientists to attend Course on Cyanobacteria Identification

Mazatlan, Mexico, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) Researchers from Cienfuegos´ Center for Environmental Studies (CEAC) will attend the Regional Course on Identification of Cyanobacteria Species by Microscopy and Basic Concepts of Molecular Biology, which will be held for four days at the Mazatlan Academic Unit of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (ICML-UNAM), Mazatlan, Mexico.

This course is part of the regional project “Evaluation of organic and inorganic environmental contamination in aquatic environments and its impact on the risk of cyanobacteria producing cyanotoxins – RLA 7026”, of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The head of the Cuban project Aimee Valle Pombrol told Prensa Latina this Course “aims to update basic knowledge on the taxonomy and systematics of cyanobacteria for their identification by traditional and molecular methods”.

Likewise, the CEAC researcher said that “at the end of the training activity, participants should be able to identify the main morphospecies of bloom-forming cyanobacteria in the region by using taxonomic keys, synoptic tables and consulting the most important guides, catalogs and treatises available in the region”.

In addition to “acquiring theoretical and practical knowledge for the establishment of cultures of cyanobacteria isolated from harmful algal blooms in the region; and learning the theoretical basis for the molecular identification of cyanobacteria from harmful blooms and from strains established in culture, among others,” she said.
