Barbados: Blockade against Cuba violates the letter of UN Charter

United Nations, Nov 2 (Prensa Latina) Barbados stated on Thursday that the continued imposition of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba violates both the letter and the spirit of the United Nations Charter.

Speaking on the second day of debates at the UN General Assembly on a draft resolution to end Washington’s blockade, the representative of Barbados, François Jackman, asserted that the principles of the UN Charter are based, among others, on the respect for the equal sovereignty of States.

The diplomat also mentioned non-interference in internal affairs, the peoples’ right to self-determination, the peaceful settlement of disputes and the maintenance of friendly relations. He added that peaceful coexistence and sustainable development require respect for these principles by all.

For these reasons, Barbados opposes the imposition of punitive unilateral measures, especially when they entail the extraterritorial enforcement of legislation that violates international law and restricts the freedom of trade and navigation, and the sovereignty and freedom of States, he explained.

In spite of that policy, Cuba has provided invaluable support to my country’s national healthcare service and has sent medical personnel to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, said Jackman, who defined Cuba as a pillar for South-South cooperation.
