FA Government to prioritize fight against child poverty

Fernando-Pereira-Frente-Amp
Montevideo, Nov 2 (Prensa Latina) Frente Amplio (Broad Front, FA) has the priority of fighting child poverty if it wins the elections on October 2024, the president of the opposition political group, Fernando Pereira, reaffirmed.

He made this promise on Wednesday at a ceremony to celebrating the 19th anniversary of the first triumph of the FA with the presidency of Tabaré Vázquez, which was attended by the presidential candidates, Mayors Yamandú Orsi and Carolina Cosse, and Senator Mario Bergara.

In his speech, he recalled that when the left wing took office in 2005, 40 percent of his compatriots were living in poverty.

Pereira pointed out that the FA governments created the National Healthcare System, built 69 high schools, increased teachers’ salaries and improved work conditions and rules for farm workers.

He criticized President Luis Lacalle Pou’s performance, which he described as “half a decade lost for workers, half a decade lost for pensioners.”

Pereira added that the FA listens to and learns from the dialogue that its leadership has held for two years with numerous social organizations throughout the country.

Another priorities will be the work of young people, he said.

He pointed out that if the FA wins the elections it will call for social dialogue to reform social security, which was promoted by the current administration and was passed by Parliament with a pro-government majority.
