Regional Workshop on Sustainable Tourism to be held in Varadero, Cuba

Matanzas, Cuba, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) On November 9 and 10, the Brisas del Caribe Hotel in the Cuban resort city of Varadero will host the Regional Workshop on Sustainable Tourism.

Under the name Incorporating Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change Mitigation in Sustainable Development of tourism in Cuba, the project developed in Cuba with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) will be the focus of the workshop.

As explained exclusively to Prensa Latina by the project’s national director Freddy Morales, together with the study area being carried out in Matanzas jointly with UNDP and GEF, there is another one in the north of the province of Ciego de Avila, a region that will host the workshop corresponding to the region as of today.

The objective of the project is to contribute to the sustainability of tourism in Cuba through the integration of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and climate change mitigation with an emphasis on vulnerable coastal-marine areas through the design and implementation of innovative models with strengthened capacities and financial mechanisms, he said.

Morales explained that achieving the integration of biodiversity in all sectors as well as in landscapes and seascapes and promoting innovation and technology transfer of advances in sustainable energy to accelerate the adoption of energy efficiency are GEF work fronts that are being worked on in the project and will be discussed at the Workshop.

The director commented that the Workshop will allow visualization of how much has been done to date in terms of the struggle to achieve sustainable tourism that is inserted within the bases of the National Economic and Social Development Plan 2030 and the State Plan for the Confrontation of Climate Change.
