Uruguay has a transplant rate of 56.1 per million inhabitants

Montevideo, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay today has an organ transplant rate of 56.1 per million inhabitants, according to official data released today.

The National Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplants (INDT) reported that last year 390 of these surgical procedures were performed, more than the 289 with which it closed 2021.

According to the source, in 2022 there were 142 kidney transplants, 211 cornea transplants, 24 liver transplants, 8 heart transplants, 4 lung transplants and 1 combined transplant.

Up to November 14, 349 transplants were performed in Uruguay: 119 renal, eight cardiac, one pulmonary, 23 hepatic, one hepato-renal, and 197 cornea transplants.

However, on the waiting list, there are 1,362 transplants of which 429 are renal, 67 cardiac, 25 pulmonary, 36 hepatic, and 805 corneal transplants.

In Uruguay, since 2006, every person over 18 years of age is a donor if he/she did not express in life his/her decision not to be a donor (Law 18.968). In addition, any person over 18 years of age can expressly state his or her will to be or not to be a donor, partially or totally.
