Guatemala exceeds 90 percent of electricity coverage

Guatemala City, Dec 7 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala reached on Thursday 90.1% of homes with electricity coverage, above projection by the Energy and Mines Ministry (MEM).

With those actions it was possible to reach 51,000 homes, benefitting for around 250,000 inhabitants ntionwide, MEM stated.

The progress is the result of decentralization strategies in the energy sector, which is successful thanks to the approach with MEM-led local authorities.

At the beginning of the administration of President Alejandro Giammattei electricity coverage was 88.1%, according to official records.

Past June, former Minister of Electrification Pimentel Mata praised Sacatepequez, Guatemala City, Escuintla, Chimaltenango, Quetzaltenango, Solola and Totonicapan as the most advanced departments in electrification (above 95%).

Suchitepequez, Retalhuleu, El Progreso, Jutiapa, Santa Rosa and San Marcos with 90 %, while Zacapa, Jalapa, Huehuetenango, Chiquimula, Quiche, Izabal and Baja Verapaz with 80%.
