z-lam-caricom-onu-a-1
Georgetown, Jan 1 (Prensa Latina) Guyana assumed on Monday the rotating presidency of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to promote regional development and prosperity during its six-month term.

In a message on the occasion, Guyana’s President and current leader of the bloc, Irfaan Ali, mentioned his commitment to work on the security of the region’s countries and preserve the principle of peace.

Ali emphasized the priority of supporting Haiti’s efforts to recover stability and calm, besides promoting nutrition programs and the fight against climate change.

He also referred to the search for new mechanisms to achieve the desired Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME), with greater freedom of movement for people, goods, and capital.

Among other things, he announced that in February, Guyana will host the 46th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of CARICOM to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the integrationist bloc.

Ali replaced his Dominican counterpart, Roosevelt Skerrit, who has led CARICOM since July 1st.
