Rise in lead contaminated products triggers alerts in Ecuador

Quito, Jan 16 (Prensa Latina) The National Agency of Regulation, Control and Health Surveillance (Arcsa), announced today that the ground nutmeg brand "Doña Jana" and sold in markets in Ecuador also contains lead.

The health entity issued an alert to citizens not to consume it and detailed through its social network X that, after performing laboratory analysis, lead contamination was detected in this product.

However, Arcsa’s statement does not establish any procedure for the withdrawal from the market of the nutmeg in question.

Ecuador, in December 2023, activated the alerts after detecting high levels of lead in five products containing cinnamon that are manufactured here.

According to laboratory studies, apple fruit puree with cinnamon, Wanabana brand tropical fruit puree, Weis brand apple porridge with cinnamon, and another product of the same type from Schnucks, are among the contaminated products.

In addition, the organic mango compote also of the Wanabana brand is consumed in this South American nation, for which the sanitary authority manages its withdrawal from the national market. On the other hand, local media denounce that the first four were exported.
