Smell of cut tobacco in the central province of Cuba

Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, January 16 (Prensa Latina) The smell of the tobacco harvest is already present in this central province of Cuba, as the cutting of sun tobacco begins and the activity continues in the capping, specialists say today.

The Sancti Spiritus vegueros are committed to achieve high yields in the traditional branch (black tobacco) of which they are the largest producers in the country.

Tobacco-growing areas benefit from varieties that are resistant to the main evils that affect the crop: black pata, blue mold and tobacco mosaic virus, and at the same time have superior growth and development.

This means that in the current tobacco year 2023-2024 we aspire for a greater recovery in the production of the leaf sprouts or coatings, little development of offspring and good combustibility of its dry leaves.

For the experts of the Collection and Processing Company, this crop, intended largely for export and earning foreign currency, is of great interest to the economy and the producers themselves, who aspire to continue growing.

The cutting of the first cujes of sol en palo tobacco took place this week in the municipality of Taguasco, which, together with Cabaiguán, is where there are the greatest number of farmers and cooperatives linked to the cultivation of the aromatic leaf.

In the current campaign, about two thousand hectares were contracted, of which 1,740 in the sun in stick modality and the rest in covered tobacco, where there was a slight increase compared to the previous year.

Nearly two thousand producers are committed to contributing more than two thousand 760 tons between both modalities. When it comes to planting leaves for export, the use of technology is in first place to achieve the planned objectives in the 260 hectares planted.

Yoandi Rodríguez, 2022 Habano Prize in Production, within the framework of the 23rd Habano Festival, told Prensa Latina that achieving excellence in this area will respond to the demands of the economy, focused on the production of cigarettes for export.

The young farmer, belonging to the Nieves Morejón Credit and Services Cooperative of Cabaiguán, and with more than 20 years in the sector, is one of the largest wrapper harvesters for rolling premium cigars in Cuba.

In this regard, he assured that his productive jewel is the highest quality covered tobacco, even though it requires a lot of effort and dedication but brings greater dividends, he noted.
