Government to deduct salary of those who join strike in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Jan 18 (Prensa Latina) The spokesman of the Argentine Presidency, Manuel Adorni, confirmed today the decision to deduct one day's salary from state employees who participate in a general strike scheduled for January 24.

In a press conference, the spokesman pointed out that the salary ‘is a consideration and it is reasonable for those who do not work not to be paid’.

For her part, the Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich told the radio station Observador 107.9. that a protocol will be applied against street and road blockades as part of a march to Congress also planned for that day.

At the end of December, the General Labor Confederation called the 12-hour strike and demonstration to reject an adjustment plan, anti-protest measures, a decree of need and urgency (DNU) and a package of laws presented by President Javier Milei.

The DNU provides for the dismantling of more than 300 regulations, among them laws on rents, supply, land, industrial and commercial promotion.

It also approves the reform of the labor regime, modifies the Civil and Commercial Code, changes the regulatory framework of prepaid medicine and social works.

In turn, the bill called Bases and Points of Departure for the Freedom of the Argentines establishes the economic, social security, defense, tariff, energy, sanitary, administrative and social emergency will be extended until December 31, 2025.

It is made up of more than 600 articles, grants legislative powers to the Executive Branch and states that the Executive Branch may extend the aforementioned term for two years.

It also establishes the privatization of state-owned companies and corporations and their conversion into public limited companies.

On the other hand, it states that ‘whoever directs, organizes or coordinates a meeting or demonstration that impedes, hinders or obstructs circulation or public or private transportation or that causes injury to persons or damage to property shall be punished with imprisonment from two to five years, whether they are present or not’.
