Perception of public insecurity decreases in Mexico

Mexico City, Jan 18 (Prensa Latina) The percentage of people who feel unsafe in Mexico decreased in five years, when actions against organized crime in the country intensified, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted today.

The president revealed data from a survey, which found a decrease in that indicator from 73.7 percent in 2018 to 64.2 percent last December.

In his opinion, these are good results because “people are feeling that things are improving,” although concern about crime on the streets of the Latin American nation persists.

The survey registered 64.8 percent of women over 18 years of age who considered it unsafe to live in the main cities of Mexico and 21.9 percent confessed to being victims of at least one type of personal harassment or sexual violence in public places.

A large part of those surveyed expressed fear in spaces such as ATMs (70.6 points), public transportation (64.1) and banks (53.2) percent. The cities with the highest levels of danger were Fresnillo, Naucalpan, Uruapan, Ecatepec, Zacatecas and Cuernavaca.

Meanwhile, the cities shown as quietest in the survey were Benito Juárez, Puerto Vallarta, Piedras Negras, Mérida, La Paz and Los Cabos.

The territory of Mexico is used by drug cartels to traffic illicit substances to the United States, but it also suffers from evils such as extortion, large-scale gasoline theft, illegal logging, migrant smuggling and kidnapping.
