El Salvador reports 20 homicide-free days in January

San Salvador, Jan 27 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador has reported 20 days without gang-related murders, according to the National Civil Police (PNC).

With six days left in the month, authorities could tie or surpass the monthly record without homicides set in April 2023 with 24 days free of gang-related homicides.

This achievement is attributed to the Territorial Control Plan (PCT), launched on June 20, 2019, and the exception regime adopted by the Legislative Assembly in March 2023, which will be in force until February 10 after its 22nd extension on January 9.

Over the past year, the country has gone from being one of the most violent nations in the world to report a daily death rate by violence of 0.4 at the end of December, and an annual rate of 2.4 per 100,000 people, very far from 106.82 reported in 2015.

In the last few weeks, the Government increased its raids against gangs in several regions of the country, has arrested more than 100 gang members, and has initiated criminal proceedings against 494 gang leaders.

The Mara Salvatrucha leadership is accused of committing 54,137 homicides in the last 10 years, including the murder of 56 police officers, 15 soldiers, a prison guard, a prosecutor and 351 homicides related to law enforcement officers.
