Italian President calls for peace in Middle East on Remembrance Day

Sergio-Mattarella-768x576
Rome, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Italian President Sergio Mattarella called today in his speech for Holocaust Remembrance Day, to prevent an escalation of resentment and hatred that hinders a solution to ensure peace in the Middle East.

During the ceremony held at the Quirinale Palace, seat of the Executive, Mattarella pointed out that ‘those who have suffered the vile attempt to erase their people from the earth know that another people cannot be denied the right to a State’, published a note on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.

In this way the Italian leader referred on this date, dedicated to remember the Jewish victims of the Holocaust during the Second World War, to the current conflict between Israel and Palestine, as well as the path to its solution, with the necessary recognition as a State of the latter nation, for the peaceful coexistence of both peoples.

The ceremony was attended by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, as well as the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, Ignazio La Russa and Lorenzo Fontana, respectively, in addition to representatives of the Government, Parliament and the Jewish community, as well as other political and military authorities.

”We consider Israel as a country close to us and fully friendly, today and in the future, to share history and values.”

“We are and will always be committed to its security, the president said there.”

He stated that “we feel the anguish for the hostages in the cruel hands of Hamas growing within us, day by day’, but at the same time ‘anguish also arises for the numerous victims among the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip.”
