Chilean President to summon Security Council due to violence

Santiago de Chile, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) Chilean President Gabriel Boric on Thursday announced his decision to summon the National Security Council (Cosena) amid the growing wave of violence, a call observed with caution by the Human Rights Institute.

According to the head of State, the meeting will allow receiving comments on the best way to implement the critical infrastructure project, currently being processed in Congress, which will facilitate the provision of military personnel in places where it is necessary to reinforce the police.

Defeating delinquency, violent crimes, drug trafficking and the proliferation of firearms is a priority for my government,’ Boric stated.

Questioned on the subject, National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) Director Consuelo Contreras noted that they will look carefully at the proposals and measures to be taken by the Cosena.

Contreras emphasized the importance of balancing security measures with unrestricted respect for citizens’ prerogatives.

We are always concerned that for greater security there may be a restriction of rights and liberties,’ she added.
