Colombia highlights reduction of polluting gas emissions

Bogota, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) The reduction of 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide by the Ecopetrol Group between 2020 and 2023 is equivalent to about 197 days without vehicle emissions in Colombia's capital, it was highlighted today.

The president of the oil company, Ricardo Roa, estimated that the industrial group is working hard on the decarbonization route, which stopped emitting 581, 532 tons of greenhouse gases in 2023.

This result was possible thanks to the implementation of energy efficiency initiatives, renewable energies and reduction of fugitive emissions, venting and flaring, according to a company statement.

”We continue working on sustainability, which represents clean air, less venting, incorporation of renewable energies in our energy matrix and with this we will continue to advance with strength in the fair and equitable energy transition’, it stated.

Ecopetrol is Colombia’s largest company responsible for more than 60 percent of hydrocarbon production, and for the hydrocarbon transportation, logistics, refining, petrochemicals and natural gas distribution system.

Initially, the Ecopetrol Group had set a goal of reducing 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, between 2020 and 2024, to continue driving the fair and equitable energy transition, revealed Roa.

But, due to the results achieved in 2023, they reached a point where they only need to reduce emissions by 100,000 tons to meet the goal set for 2024, the information added.
