Low vaccination rates against Covid-19 in Italy

Rome, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) The national vaccination campaign against Covid-19 in Italy, aimed mainly at people over 60 years of age, was described as "a sensational failure," given the low coverage achieved so far.

A report released on Thursday by the Gimbe Foundation, one of the country’s leading independent health promotion organizations, indicates that with a national coverage of only 5.7 percent of those vaccinated in the 60-69 age group, Italy ranks 14th in Europe.

Among people aged 70 to 79, the percentage of those immunized is only 11 percent and among those over 80 it reaches 14.4 percent, which places the nation in the 15th and 14th places at the regional level.

Last January 26, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published a report on regional Covid-19 vaccination coverage among people over 60 years of age, which covered September 1, 2023, and January 15 of this year.

However, Italy refrained from sending that information, and neither did Austria, Croatia, Germany, Latvia and Sweden, so the Gimbe Foundation conducted an independent study, using official national data, according to Nino Cartabellotta, president of that organization.
