Mexico, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) The Mayan Train has operated for 55 days and is already a success because it has transported nearly 51,000 passengers on the Palenque-Campeche-Cancun route, General David Lozano, director of the company in charge of the project, said on Monday.

The military officer gave a speech at President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning press conference on Monday, and confirmed that the third stage of the railway project that will run from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen will be inaugurated on February 29. It runs along 50.57 kilometers of a double track in one of the areas with the highest tourist demand in the country.

He added that on February 28, a supervision tour will be made from Palenque to Cancun in order to increase the speed from 120 to 140 kilometers per hour to know the operation of the convoy on the track, although maintaining the safety premise.

General Lozano Aguila explained that the opening of the third stage of the train will have two more stations: Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, which will bring the route to 24 out of a total of 34.

By instructions from the federal president, there will be two frequencies for the workers of the Riviera Maya, one that will leave at 6 a.m. from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, and another in the opposite direction that will leave at 7:30 a.m.

There will also be three tourist schedules at 9, 12 and 15 hours in the former direction, and 10:30, 13:30 and 16:30 from Playa del Carmen to Cancun.

So far, he added, five trains are operating on the route already in operation, four of them with regular services and one standby.

They are standard trains for 221 passengers.

So far, he reiterated, 50,976 passengers have used the service, equivalent to 927 people per day.
