President Joe Biden: Dangers hanging over his reelection

Washington, Feb 18 (Prensa Latina) Despite his confidence that he can make it, President Joe Biden is currently showing signs in the electoral environment that his race for 2024 reelection would be threatened.

An analysis published by Gallup showed that Biden’s approval rating and citizens’ satisfaction with his administration -especially on economy issue- are below levels associated with successful candidates seeking a second term.

The analysis by Jeffrey M. Jones and Megan Brenan, two Gallup analysts, reviewed various indicators of Americans’ approval on Joe Biden.

According to their comments, President Biden’s fate in the upcoming elections would be determined, among other factors, whether voters’ criteria on the economy change, despite the fact that the president considers his economy-related agenda has been successful.

For example, while the country’s inflation rate has already dropped from the 9.1% peak it reached in June 2022, it is still roughly double what it was in November 2020, and many Americans continue facing up cloud-kissing prices.

All presidents with 50% approval ratings (or even higher) near Election Day have been re-elected, as noted by an article in the Hispanic daily La Opinión.

While those with approval ratings below 50% have lost, but George W. Bush who won a 4-year term reelection with a 48% support in Gallup’s last 2004 pre-election poll.

Currently Biden’s job approval rating stands at 41%, the lowest compared to other presidents´ seeking a second term when making a January cut in an election year.

Stopping the genocide in Palestine and halting to arm Israel are also necessary conditions for a change in voters, a column in Democracy Now said while referring to the chance Biden may lose his re-election.

At the same time, polls reflect that Hispanic and young voters show a declining trend in their support for Biden, so it could be worrisome for the Blue Party, as they are part of the key demographic groups who drove his (Biden) victory in the November 2020 elections.

And to cap it all, a shattering report by a special prosecutor cleared him (Biden) of wrongdoing regarding an investigation into the handling of classified documents during his time as vice president (2009-2017), but left him in a very bad light in his assessments of his cognitive abilities.

Robert Hur, a prosecutor appointed by Donald Trump in his term, uncovered a political bombshell and even though the age issue was already questioned, the report that put Biden as an old man with good intentions, limited capabilities and forgetfulness, has created a not very pleasant environment for the president.

Some GOPers are even calling for the 25th Amendment of the Constitution related to succession in case of incapacity to perform the powers and duties of his office.

So far everything remains in the realm of the reopened debate about the president’s mental acuity and his suitability for the November 5 presidential election. Neither he nor the Democratic Party has raised the question of replacing the nominee, a question not impossible, but unlikely.
