Colombia to speak before the ICJ on Israeli violations in Palestine

Bogotá, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) Colombia will participate in the hearings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel's practices and policies in the occupied Palestinian territory.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the request was the product of a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 30th, which was approved by 87 States, including Colombia.

The Colombian delegation will be headed by the coordinator of the Foreign Ministry’s Issues Group before the ICJ, Andrea Jiménez Herrera, who will deliver the oral intervention, and the Colombian ambassador to the Netherlands, Carolina Olarte Bácares.

The Government of Colombia announce, last January 10th, that as a State party to the said Convention, it is willing to accompany this judicial action through resources and procedural tools provided by the Statute and practices of the ICJ.

President Gustavo Petro maintains an unchanged position regarding what he has described as Israel’s genocide against Palestine, and advocated for an end to the escalation of violence by the Israeli forces against the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.

On Tuesday, Petro expressed his solidarity with Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, after Israel declared him “persona non grata” for comparing the genocide against Gaza with the Holocaust. “There is a genocide ongoing in Gaza and thousands of children, women, and elderly civilians are being cowardly murdered. Lula has only said the truth, and the truth is defended, or barbarism will annihilate us,” Petro wrote on X.

According to Petro, the entire region must unite to immediately end the violence in Palestine, which has caused the death of some 30,000 civilians since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on October 7th. “The ruling of the International Court of Justice on Israel must generate application and consequences in the diplomatic relations of all countries in the world,” the Colombian president emphasized.
