Ecuador’s COE declares Chone City in emergency after heavy rains

Quito, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador’s Emergency Operations Committee (COE) declared on Wednesday Chone City, Manabi province in emergency after the heavy rains of the last hours.

The COE states that Manabi is one of the jurisdictions most affected by rainfall in recent days and in Chone, 300 people have been evacuated and economic losses amount to USD$ 12 million per day.

According to estimates of the Mayor’s Office in that area, the storm and the flooding of the rivers exceed the levels recorded in March 2023, when at least 70% of the houses in the urban area were flooded.

Mayor Leonardo Rodriguez announced the collapse of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) Hospital and the water entered the electronic operating system. This is really alarming news, he noted.

Meanwhile, in Los Rios province, winter has affected over 1,000 hectares of crops and some 2,500 hectares of rice have been lost in Daule City in Guayas province, according to local press media.

Likewise, the flooding of the Soloma river, in Bolivar province, caused several houses to collapse and were swept away by the river.

Images taken by local residents are circulating in social media, showing how the houses fell into the river.

At least five deaths and 22,769 people affected is the balance so far of the current rainy season in Ecuador, where 35 rivers overflowed their banks.

According to the Secretariat of Risk Management, lately, three people died in a landslide in the province of Azuay and one in Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas as a result of a sinkhole.

The provinces with the highest incidence are Guayas, Los Rios, Esmeraldas, Manabi and El Oro, which concentrate almost all the victims and affected infrastructure, with 40 houses destroyed and another 5,000 with partial damage.
