Leaders of parliaments from Cuba and Namibia hold talks

Windhoek, Feb 24 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Cuban Parliament, Esteban Lazo, conversed with his Namibian counterpart, Peter Katjavivi, as his first official activity after arriving on Friday to attend the funeral of President Hage G. Geingob.

During the meeting, Lazo thanked the numerous expressions of solidarity and support for the Cuban Revolution historically received from Namibia, especially against the hostile policy of the United States Government towards Cuba, and in particular against the blockade imposed by Washington, which he described as “a true war of suffocation against our people.”

Lazo reiterated his condolences for the death of Geingob: “We are here to ratify our solidarity and our most heartfelt condolences, on behalf of the Party, the State, the Government and the Cuban people, in this moment of pain; in addition to participating in the state funeral of the late president,” he said. “Namibia loses a President and a valuable son; and Cuba loses a brother,” he highlighted.

In Lazo’s words, since 2016, when Peter Katjavivi led a parliamentary delegation that participated in the Second International Conference “With all and for the good of all” held in Havana, bilateral ties continued to grow increasingly closer.

With the purpose of continuing to strengthen ties between the two parliaments, there is an interest in taking relations to a higher level, through various initiatives, including the future signing of a cooperation agreement between both bodies, he said.

For his part, Katjavivi expressed his confidence that both nations can look to the future with confidence, because the legacy of their leaders will be continued.

Relations between Cuba and Namibia continue to be multifaceted and deep, “rooted in the common struggles of our peoples and in a close friendship between Fidel Castro and Sam Nujoma”, the official said.

Katjavivi also supported the proposed initiatives regarding interparliamentary cooperation, and stressed that Namibia will continue to support Cuba in its just cause for the lifting of the US blockade.
