El Salvador solidifies security achievements

San Salvador, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador is making progress in the fight against gangs and achieving days without homicides.

Since March 2022, when the emergency regime came into force, to date, El Salvador has reached 451 days without murders, which has contributed to 564 days with zero victims due to gang actions, since President Nayib Bukele took office.

According to the InSight Crime publication, El Salvador is listed as the least violent country in Latin America, which was achieved thanks to security strategies, something that Bukele frequently highlights when pointing out that the country went from being “the most dangerous in the world to being the safest in the Western Hemisphere.”

InSight Crime revealed that at least 117,492 people were murdered in Latin America and the Caribbean during 2023, which places the average homicide rate around 20 per 100,000 people, while the rate for Salvadorans is the lowest, with 2.4.

While stepping up collaboration with neighboring countries, such as Guatemala and Honduras, Salvadoran authorities increased their actions against alleged gang members and collaborators, who are trying to escape to Mexico and the United States.

Minors using social networks to show their alleged gang membership were arrested in recent days. The National Civil Police confirmed the capture of two 17-year-old students for allegedly belonging to the Mara Salvatrucha.
