The massacre occurred in a rural sector on the outskirts of the town of Joya de los Sachas, in the Amazonian province of Orellana, where a nighttime curfew is in effect.
However, in the evening a shooting was heard, the Chief of the Police in Orellana, Henry Coral told in a press conference.
Orellana stated that a criminal gang may be behind the crime, although he did not give names, and assured that investigations are underway.
The seven victims were wearing military clothes similar to those used by the Armed Forces; however, that institution assured in a statement that none of them belonged to its troops.
According to the official press release of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, in the area they found three assault rifles type firearms, two handmade long arms, two feeders with 5.56 millimeters ammunition, a nine millimeters pistol, and 4,350 nine millimeters caliber ammunition.
At the onset of January, when declaring the existence of an internal armed conflict against organized crime, President Daniel Noboa had identified 22 transnational organized crime groups as terrorist organizations and belligerent non-state actors.
In that way, the president opened a legal door for the military and police to act with all their resources to neutralize criminals.

Masacre en provincia de Ecuador bajo estado de excepción
Quito, 28 feb (Prensa Latina) Siete hombres con uniformes militares fueron hallados muertos hoy en la parte trasera de una camioneta en Ecuador, hecho que tuvo lugar mientras rige en esta nación un estado de excepción.
La masacre ocurrió en un sector rural a las afueras de la localidad Joya de los Sachas, en la provincia amazónica de Orellana, donde rige un toque de queda nocturno.
No obstante, en el horario de la noche se escuchó una balacera, señaló el jefe de la Policía en Orellana, Henry Coral, en una rueda de prensa.
Según comentó, detrás del crimen puede estar alguna banda criminal, aunque no dio nombres y aseguró que las investigaciones continúan.
Las siete víctimas vestían ropa militar similar a la utilizada por las Fuerzas Armadas, sin embargo, esa institución aseguró en un comunicado que ninguno pertenecía a sus tropas.
De acuerdo con la nota oficial del Comando Conjunto de las Fuerzas Armadas, en el área encontraron tres armas de fuego tipo fusil de assalto, dos armas largas de fabricación artesanal, dos alimentadoras con munición 5,56 milímetros, una pistola nueve milímetros, y cuatro mil 350 municiones calibre nueve milímetros.
Al declarar a inicios de enero la existencia de un conflicto armado interno contra el crimen organizado, el presidente Daniel Noboa identificó 22 grupos del crimen organizado transnacional como organizaciones terroristas y actores no estatales beligerantes.
De esa forma, el mandatario abrió una puerta legal para que militares y policías actúen con todos sus recursos para neutralizar a los delincuentes.
