More than 300 flights cancelled due to strike in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) More than 300 flights were cancelled and Argentina's airports made changes in their operations due to a 24-hour strike by workers from the aeronautical sector.

Although American Airlines and FlyBondi will continue to provide some services at the Ministro Pistarini aerodrome in Ezeiza, because they have their own personnel, others such as Aerolineas Argentinas, JetSmart and Latam suspended all their operations.

The associations of Aeronautical Personnel and Airline Pilots, as well as the Union of Senior and Professional Personnel of Airline Companies, called the protest to demand a pay rise and denounce the Ministry of Economy’s refusal to dialogue.

They presented us with a proposal of a 12-percent increase for the salaries of March (to be paid in the first days of April). The offered guideline only deepens the loss of the purchasing power registered in the current period, which leads to an unsustainable wage gap of 70 percent with respect to inflation, according to a statement from these groups says.

The strike led Aerolíneas Argentinas to cancel 331 flights scheduled for Tuesday, which will affect 24,000 passengers.

In addition, the company informed that 10,000 travelers changed their flights voluntarily in the last few days.

In the case of JetSmart, 8,300 people had to reschedule or suspend their plans, as well as some 4,000 at Latam.

During the last few weeks, La Fraternidad Union, which brings together train drivers, the State Workers Association and the Argentine Education Confederation held demonstrations and strikes to express their disagreement with the measures taken by Javier Milei’s government and to demand salary increases.
