Security Council to hold emergency session on Haiti

United Nations, March 5 (Prensa Latina) The UN Security Council will hold a session on Haiti tomorrow, as confirmed today by the organization in the midst of the tense situation caused by violence, which makes the return of Prime Minister Ariel Henry impossible.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, coincides with the calls of the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to speed up the arrival of the Multinational Support Mission, approved since last October, but with no date yet for its launching.

This Tuesday, the spokesman for the head of the UN, Stéphane Dujarric, insisted on the need for urgent measures, in particular to support the deployment of this initiative with financing.

The force will need to address the pressing security needs of the Haitian people and prevent the country from descending into further chaos, the spokesperson said at a briefing.

The UN also called on the Government of Haiti and other political actors to quickly agree on the necessary measures to advance the political process towards the restoration of democratic institutions, through the holding of elections.

Tomorrow’s Wednesday meeting of the Security Council foresees the virtual participation of the head of the United Nations Mission in Haiti, María Isabel Salvador.

According to figures from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the most recent escalation in several neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince, the capital, already leaves a balance of 15 thousand people forced to flee their homes, of which the majority were previously displaced .

On this day, the humanitarian community in the nation demanded that all parties immediately end the violence; allow safe access to people in need; and respect human rights and international standards.

The surge, which keeps Haiti’s main airport closed, coincides with delays in the launching of the Multinational Mission authorized by the UN Security Council, in an attempt to restore law and order in the country.

Despite the progress made by the recent signing of an agreement between the Haitian Prime Minister and the Kenyan authorities, the start of operations that could be led by that African nation has not yet been defined.

The UN estimates that some 5.5 million people need humanitarian assistance, equivalent to half of its population.

Meanwhile, this year’s $674 million humanitarian appeal for the Caribbean country is only 2.5 percent funded.
