Argentine Metallurgical Workers’ Union stages 48-hour strike

Buenos Aires, Mar 13 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Metallurgical Workers' Union (UOM) started a 48-hour strike on Wednesday, the second of three planned for this month to demand decent wages in the face of the complex economic scenario.

After the first protest on March 6, the UOM members stop activities this Wednesday and Thursday. The third strike is scheduled for March 19-20-21.

In light of repeated failures to reach an agreement with the managing enterprise sector and the economic situation of the country, the UOM Executive Board calls for continuing the National Struggle Plan in three stages of union action to achieve the recovery and reestablishment of a fair wage, as stated by a press release from that organization.

The slogan of the protests is “Dignity First.”

The UOM members believe that the payments received so far are below the cost of the basic food basket and are insufficient to face the existing high inflation. They also condemn the employers’ refusal to renew the payments and accused them of infringing collective bargaining mechanisms.

The UOM is also concerned about the significant price surge and the constant erosion of workers’ purchasing power.
