Cuba commemorates the Baraguá Protest

Santiago de Cuba, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) In Mangos de Baraguá, municipality of Mella to the north of this city, a representation of the Cuban people recalled today the protest staged by the patriot Antonio Maceo Grajales on March 15, 1878.

From early hours dozens of residents of the community of Baraguá headed by the main authorities of the Party and the Government of the province of Santiago de Cuba and the local ones, gathered at the foot of the obelisk that perpetuates the historical fact that 146 years ago did not allow the peace without independence proposed by the Spanish government.

Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first Secretary of the organization in the province, presided over the political event and military ceremony in which the importance of General Antonio Maceo’s attitude for the continuity of the Revolution initiated by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes ten years before was transcended.

Victoria Rodríguez, first Secretary of the PCC in the municipality of Mella valued the impact of the event, qualified by José Martí as one of the most glorious in the history of Cuba and its influence in the intransigent and revolutionary heritage of the Cubans and their current decision to resist in the face of any threat.
