External financing supports agricultural gender project in Cuba

Havana (Prensa Latina) The introduction of the international collaboration project Agrofrutales in the province of Artemisa, Cuba, had an impact on the local economy, generating employment, especially for women, and contributing to reducing gender gaps.

That project has among its objectives to provide food security through the management of mango, guava, and papaya agri-food chains. Since 2018 it has been applied in five municipalities, Caimito, Alquízar, Artemisa, Contramaestre and Santiago de Cuba-, located in the provinces of Artemisa and Santiago de Cuba.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, the deputy superintendent of the Municipal Administration of Artemisa, Lázaro Yadier Pérez, explained that the locality participates in the implementation of the project managed by the United Nations Development Program, with Canada as a donor country.

This external financing, he said, has made possible the development of the territorial economy with the installation of innovative technologies such as the “Badon” mini-industry whose production capacity for fruit processing is around 12 tons per hour, and as an added value is inserted in a gender project.

Part of this production line is operated by women, Pérez said.
