Rains move to the north and continue to affect Uruguay

Montevideo, Mar 15 (Prensa Latina) The extreme north of Uruguay is expecting heavy rains on Friday, after they caused damage and flooding in several departments of the country.

The National Meteorological Institute updated its warnings for heavy rains and strong winds, while the National Emergency System began the first evacuations in the north.

Central and southern departments are repairing the damage from storms during the week, which caused rivers and streams to overflow, roofs to be blown off houses, floods, trees to fall, interruption of power supply, as well as evacuated and self-evacuated families, among other damages.

Thousands of customers have no electricity. Ten national highways and numerous local roads were cut off, explaining the difficulties in viability.

In Colonia, west of this capital, the water treatment plants in Nueva Helvecia and Rosario were damaged.

The first evacuations in the department of San José followed the flooding of the river of the same name, which reached 8.38 meters above its safe level (7.15 meters).
