Eritrea and Russia talk about bilateral issues and cooperation

Asmara, Apr 2 (Prensa Latina) Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki met on Tuesday with the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Vice Admiral Vladimir Kasatonov, to discuss bilateral issues outlined at the Russia-Africa Summit held last July.

During the meeting in the port city of Massawa, Afwerki and Kasatonov addressed the areas of comprehensive cooperation discussed at the St. Petersburg summit, which included infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, marine resources, defense and security, among others.

Eritrean Information Minister Yemane G. Meskel noted on his X account that the two countries also discussed the prospects of Russian support for regional efforts for peace and stability in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa.

The head of State visited Russia’s Marshal Shaposhinkov Frigate, which has been docked in the African port since March 29 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The visit will be extended for several days so that the Russian sailors will have time to take part in cultural events, visit local tourist sites and take part in sports tournaments together with their Eritrean counterparts, according to a press release from the Russian Defense Ministry.
