Mexican President regrets assassination of Mayor Candidate

Mexico City, Apr 2 (Prensa Latina) The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, today lamented the murder of Bertha Gisela Gaytán, Morena party candidate for mayor of Celaya, in Guanajuato state, and conveyed his condolences to family and friends.

These events are very regrettable, because there are people who are fighting to enforce democracy, who are out in the streets showing their faces, fighting for others, and it hurts a lot that this happens in our country and anywhere else, said the President, describing the day as a sad one.

I want to send a very affectionate embrace, in solidarity, my condolences to Bertha Gisela’s family, to all her friends, colleagues, comrades, said the head of state during his usual morning press conference from the National Palace.

Yesterday’s information indicates that in the afternoon, the representative of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) was walking the streets of San Miguel Octopan, accompanied by several people, when she was shot and killed.

The authorities continue to investigate the incident, in which three other citizens were wounded, whose identities are unknown.

The central state of Guanajuato, governed by the opposition National Action Party, is among the six states with the highest incidence of intentional homicides, according to data from the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection.
