Argentine police attacked teachers and retirees

Buenos Aires, April 4 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Police used tear gas when attacking teachers and retirees gathered in front of Congress today to reject the measures of the Government of Javier Milei.

The Confederation of Education Workers and the Federation of University Teachers are carrying out a national strike this day to denounce the cuts in the sector, the elimination of funds and the 15 thousand layoffs carried out in recent days in the public administration.

In addition, they accompany a march by the Workers’ Central to defend retirees and demand an increase in their salaries.

We were gassed and repressed. There is no money for the people, but there is money for the International Monetary Fund. There must be a great general strike to defeat the adjustment in the streets. We demand that funds be allocated to education and retirees, said Mariana, a Social Sciences teacher, in statements to the press.

For his part, Raúl assured that protesters were on the sidewalk when the Police arrived and attacked them.

We have experience in the marches and we know that they are using a more harmful gas. We feel choking and itchy in our throat. We retirees are unprotected and abandoned, but if we do not organize from below, no one will defend us, he said. Participants in the protest carried signs accusing the Government of carrying out “a silent genocide”, by provoking hunger among children, the elderly and the people in general.

As part of the demonstration, teachers reiterated the need to call for a joint meeting (negotiation) to increase salaries so that workers can face high inflation.

They also defended public education and repudiated the anti-protest protocol approved by Security Minister Patricia Bullrich.

On the other hand, they advocated for respect for the right to a fair retirement and condemned the interruption of the sending of funds to the provinces’ pension funds.
