Although no cases are being detailed, reports from the Health Ministry (MINSAL) have identified 27 municipalities reporting highest number of suspected dengue cases which, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), could reach record levels in the Americas by 2024.
Official reports state that MINSAL is currently conducting a “National Arbovirosis Vector Control Campaign 2024,” which seeks to control the Aedes aegypti mosquito, responsible for transmitting dengue, zika and chikungunya.
The step responds to the approaching rainy season, a time when mosquito breeding sites and disease transmission tend to be upwards.
In El Salvador, according to official data, there is a 30.8% upturn in the number of suspected cases.
The list includes populous municipalities such as San Salvador, Mejicanos, Apopa, Soyapango or Tonacatepeque, as well as Ahuachapan, Chalatenango, Ciudad Arce, San Francisco Menéndez, Chalchuapa, San Antonio del Monte, Sonsonate, San Miguel, Cojutepeque, San Pedro Perulapan, San Vicente, among others.
