The members of the MIDES’ union charged Minister of Social Protection Abelardo Pinto and his Deputy Minister Bertha Zapeta with both abusing their functions and violating labor rights, as well as women’s rights.
In the facility, workers were fired for no reason, and people were hired just with a high school degree, earning salaries that “exceed 30,000 quetzales per month (almost 4,000 dollars),” described a union member, without identifying himself.
Another significant issue was the power quotas registered in the Social Development Fund, in which 5,000 quetzales (about 633 dollars) of fuel is given only for the personal use of the Director Carlos Orantes.
Employees gathered at the meeting agreed that the riots will continue until the complaint reaches Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo.
The minister of MIDES stated on Wednesday in an interview with Emisoras Unidas that he feels attacked by legislators, since they seek to hold him responsible for crimes previously committed.
I perfectly understand ongoing anxiety because all the processes of anomalies or corruption during the previous government are revealed, Pinto said.
However, the minister added that one has to be accountable, since one cannot present spurious and unfounded accusations.
The authority assured that they took up to a month of work to establish the real situation of the ministry, since the transition phase was “a joke,” he remarked. From there, we took some actions, and we were able to start acting on that basis, the minister concluded.

Trabajadores protestan en Ministerio de Desarrollo de Guatemala
Ciudad de Guatemala, 4 abr (Prensa Latina) Un numeroso grupo de trabajadores protestó hoy en la sede del Ministerio de Desarrollo Social (Mides) de Guatemala para denunciar a las autoridades del organismo por despidos injustificados y contrataciones anómalas.
Los integrantes del sindicato de esa cartera señalaron al máximo cargo Abelardo Pinto y a vicetitular de Protección Social Bertha Zapeta por abusar de sus funciones y de violaciones a los derechos laborales, así como de las mujeres.
En la institución despidieron a los trabajadores sin motivo alguno y contrataron a personas solo con título de bachiller y sueldos que “pasan los 30 mil quetzales mensuales (casi cuatro mil dólares)”, describió un sindicalista, sin identificarse.
Otro apuntó a las cuotas de poder registradas en el Fondo de Desarrollo Social, en el cual –dijo- se dan cinco mil quetzales (cerca de 633 dólares) de combustibles solo para el uso personal del Director (Carlos Orantes).
Trabajadores reunidos coincidieron en afirmar que las protestas continuarán hasta que la denuncia llegue al presidente del país, Bernardo Arévalo.
El ministro del Mides declaró la víspera en entrevista con Emisoras Unidas que se siente atacado por parte de legisladores, ya que buscan hacerlo responsable de actos realizados previamente.
Entiendo perfectamente la ansiedad que existe porque se revelen todos los procesos de anomalías o de corrupción realizados durante el Gobierno anterior, acotó.
Sin embargo, agregó, uno tiene que ser responsable, porque no puede presentar denuncias espurias y sin fundamento, manifestó Pinto. Aseguró que ocuparon hasta un mes de trabajo para establecer la situación real del ministerio, debido a que la fase de transición fue “un chiste”, remarcó.
A partir de allí, tomamos algunas acciones, y pudimos empezar a accionar sobre esa base, aseveró.
