Thousands of protesters marched in Colombia to support reforms

Bogotá, Apr 9 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of people demonstrated today in different cities of Colombia in support of the social reforms of President Gustavo Petro and in tribute to the victims of the armed conflict.

The Unitary Central of Workers of Colombia (CUT), the Colombian Federation of Educators (Fecode) and the Union of Public Employees of the National Learning Service (Sindesena), among other labor organizations, attended the call that mobilized thousands of citizens.

In Bogotá, protesters marched from the National Park to the Plaza de Bolívar, where they finally gathered to denounce the collapse of the health system bill by nine opposition congressmen to the detriment of medical care for millions of citizens.

Through banners and interventions, the workers also showed their support for the president’s proposal to hold a Constituent Assembly.

Some of the attendees also requested that authorized entities investigate the alleged embezzlements committed during the Covi-19 pandemic by the Health Promotion Companies (EPS), recently identified by the Comptroller General’s Office for the diversion of more than nine billion pesos (more of two thousand 387 million dollars at the current exchange rate).

In statements to Prensa Latina, protester Pedro Rodríguez assured that he attended the call to accompany President Gustavo Petro so that the health reform in Colombia advances, so that the EPS does not continue stealing the money of Colombians and so medical assistance reaches the territories and even the poorest.

Other demands were associated with the need to stop the genocide that Israel commits against the people of Palestine in Gaza, and in favor of stopping the military actions of the Zionist army.

Just when Colombia celebrates the National Day of Remembrance and Solidarity with Victims, tribute was also paid to the millions who suffered and suffer due to the armed conflict in the country.

The legacy of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, the leader of the Liberal Party murdered 76 years ago and who unleashed an escalation of violent clashes and protests, which shook the country starting in 1948, was also remembered. This Tuesday the hall was filled with flags, slogans and demands.
