Authorities evoke milestones of Cuba’s legal and political life

Havana, Apr 10 (Prensa Latina) Cuban leaders evoked on Tuesday historical events that marked the legal and political life of the nation: the Assembly of Guaimaro (1869), the founding of the Cuban Revolutionary Party (1892) and the proclamation of the current Constitution (2019).

On X, Vice President Salvador Valdes highlighted that the proclamation of the first Constitution of the Republic fulfills its 155th anniversary in the Assembly of Guaimaro, which enshrined the equality of all Cubans, abolishing slavery and was the starting point towards a sovereign Republic.

Valdes further stressed that Cuba’s Communist Party is a faithful heir of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, founded by National Hero Jose Marti 132 years ago nowadays, to achieve the unity of Cubans, their independence and to help the sister nation of Puerto Rico.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez recalled on X that five years ago the current Cuban Constitution was proclaimed, “a reflection of the genuinely democratic and inclusive nature of our political system and the commitment to the respect and protection of Human Rights,” the official stressed.

The Constitution of Guaimaro, Cuba’s first magna carta, was the result of the stages of national liberation struggles against Spanish colonialism.

Drafted during the Assembly of Guaimaro, in the current province of Camagüey, the fundamental law gathered the rights and aspirations of the Cuban independence movement and meant that every revolutionary process should also have its juridical expression.

The session, under the presidency of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, head of the provisional government of the East, proposed the creation of the Republic in Arms just six months after the uprising of October 10, 1868.

Over two decades following that event and supported by the first patriotic associations, Cuban National Hero Jose Marti created the Cuban Revolutionary Party (PRC) on April 10, 1892, with the main goal of achieving the absolute independence of Cuba.

According to historical documents, among the decisive moments of that organization were the election of its only officials: the Delegate (Marti) and the Treasurer (Benjamin Guerra).

This Party united the patriots who once again fought against Spanish colonialism.
