Cuba preregisters 138 athletes for the Paris-2024 Olympic Games

Paris, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuba on Monday pre-registered 138 athletes in 18 sports disciplines to participate in the Paris-2024 Olympic Games on July 26.

A Cuban delegation, headed by the Vice-President of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) Omar Venegas, carried out the procedure in this capital city before the Organizing Committee of the great event.

Regarding the pre-registration, INDER´s Highly Proficient Athletes Department Director-General Jose Antonio Miranda said that it is a prelude to the final validation of the Cuban athletes.

According to Miranda, the delegation list submitted is in line with the 35 places already obtained by Cuba and the analysis of possibilities of increasing the number of athletes in the coming months with a view to Paris-2024.

Cuba´s participation in the summer events always generates great expectations, backed by the more than 230 medals won (84 gold medals), which rates it in 16th place by nations, despite its scarce 11 million inhabitants and its condition as a developing country subjected to a hostile and unjust US blockade.

Miranda detailed that the disciplines that already have guaranteed tickets to compete in Paris are women´s free and Greco-Roman wrestling (10 athletes), athletics (six), boxing (four), shooting (four), canoeing (two), rowing (two), taekwondo (two), table tennis (two), cycling (1), weightlifting (1) and modern pentathlon (1).

Other sports disciplines such as judo, diving, beach volleyball, men’s indoor volleyball, artistic gymnastics, swimming and triathlon will surely increase the Cuban delegation.

Miranda also stated that Cuba expects to be represented by 70 to 90 athletes and rated in the top 20.
