Mayorkas’ impeachment trial begins in the US Senate

Washington, Apr 17 (Prensa Latina) The impeachment trial of the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, began today in the United States Senate, although, to the regret of Republicans, there is no scenario in which he will be removed.

So far, none of the 51 Democrats in the Upper House have expressed that they support impeachment, and even some moderate Republicans believe that the conduct of the Joe Biden administration official does not reach the level of putting him on the bench in Congress.

The process, which will be nothing like the full Senate trials that Donald Trump faced in 2020 and 2021, began this afternoon after verification that the necessary quorum exists.

Senate President Pro Tem Patty Murray (D-Washington) will conduct the trial.

She and the other 99 senators took their oath as jurors. Unlike Trump’s trials, which took more than two weeks, Democrats could finish Mayorkas’ trial this Wednesday, according to local media.

To find him guilty would require a higher standard than opening an impeachment trial, and Democrats control the Senate 51-49.

A two-thirds vote of the Senate is required to convict him. Only a majority –which they achieved with a narrow margin and on a second attempt– was necessary for the House of Representatives to open the impeachment process.

The day before, the Lower House submitted to the Senate the charges against the Secretary of Homeland Security, whom they blame for mishandling his functions in the immigration issue on the southern border.

According to advisers to the Upper House (controlled by Democrats), Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (New York) previously described the two charges promoted by Republicans against Mayorkas as “a farce” and “absurd.”

He opined that they did not provide any evidence that Mayorkas committed high crimes and misdemeanors, the standard for impeachment set by the Constitution.

Since they took control of the House of Representatives in January of last year, the Republicans attacked the Secretary of Homeland Security, whom they blame for the high number of border crossings and on the other hand sought to blame the Biden administration for the immigration crisis, an issue campaign key in an election year.
