Former Bahamas Prime Minister nominated to lead party

Nassau, May 3 (Prensa Latina) Former Prime Minister of the Bahamas Hubert A. Minnis was nominated today to compete for the position of political leader of the Free National Movement in next month's elections.

Minnis said he is running to complete several items on his agenda, specifically calling for land reform and empowering more young Bahamians to be leaders.

The former governor plans to resume his position as leader, which he held from May 9, 2012 to November 27, 2021, he said in a statement this Thursday.

During his tenure as leader of that political force, he led the party into government and won 35 of the 39 seats in parliament in the 2017 general election to unseat Prime Minister Perry Christie and the Progressive Labor Party. The doctor and politician was elected Prime Minister of the Bahamas on May 11, 2017 and served until September 17, 2021, until the electoral defeat of that party.

According to experts, his mandate was marred by the crises generated in the country after the destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian and then by the Covid-19 pandemic.

After the electoral defeat he left the position of political leader and was replaced by Michael Pintard.

The members of the Free National Movement will elect their new leader at a convention on June 1.
